Over Christmas my brother Jonathan shared with me a definition which he attributed to Alan Coren:

“Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is not using a tomato in a fruit salad.”

In composing this, my first entry in this blog, I checked the quote on the internet – it was from another editor of “Punch” magazine – Miles Kington.

My favourite quote from Alan Coren is the one that praises Sainsbury’s for keeping the riff-raff out of Waitrose.
